Common Name: Crested Gecko
Origin: New Caledonia

Lifespan: 15–20 years
Temperament: Calm, docile, and easy to care for
Crested Geckos are one of the most popular pet reptiles thanks to their gentle nature, unique appearance, and relatively simple care requirements. Recognisable by the rows of soft crests running from their eyes down their backs, these arboreal geckos are excellent for both beginner and experienced reptile keepers.
Known for their expressive faces and impressive climbing abilities, Crested Geckos are fascinating pets that are active during the evening and night.
Housing & Enclosure Requirements
Crested Geckos are arboreal, meaning they spend most of their time climbing rather than living on the ground.
Minimum enclosure size (adult):
45 × 45 × 90 cm (18 × 18 × 36 inches)
Key enclosure elements:
- Tall enclosure with plenty of height
- Branches, vines, and climbing structures
- Live or artificial plants for cover
- Humidity maintained between 60–80%
- Daytime temperatures around 22–26°C
- Night temperatures around 18–22°C
- Good ventilation
- Shallow water dish
Regular misting helps maintain humidity and provides water droplets for drinking.
Bioactive enclosures are particularly popular for Crested Geckos, creating a naturalistic environment that encourages natural behaviours.
Diet & Nutrition
Crested Geckos are omnivores and have one of the easiest reptile diets to manage.
Their diet typically consists of:
- Complete powdered crested gecko diets
- Occasional live insects such as crickets or locusts
- Small amounts of soft fruit as an occasional treat
Most adult Crested Geckos are fed prepared gecko diet 2–3 times per week, with insects offered periodically for enrichment and additional protein.
Calcium supplementation should be provided when feeding live insects.
Temperament & Handling
Crested Geckos are generally calm and tolerant of gentle handling, making them a favourite among reptile keepers.
They are:
- Docile and easy-going
- Curious and interactive
- Active during the evening and night
- Excellent climbers and jumpers
When handling, always support the gecko properly and be prepared for sudden jumps. Young geckos can be particularly energetic until they become accustomed to regular interaction.
Like some other gecko species, Crested Geckos can drop their tail if frightened or stressed. Unlike Leopard Geckos, however, the tail does not grow back.
Appearance & Morphs
One of the reasons Crested Geckos are so popular is the incredible variety of colours and patterns available.
Common morphs include:
- Flame
- Harlequin
- Dalmatian
- Tiger
- Pinstripe
- Lily White
Each gecko has its own unique appearance, making every individual special.
