Hermann’s Tortoise

Scientific Name: Testudo hermanni
Common Name: Hermann’s Tortoise
Origin: Southern Europe
Adult Size: 16–20 cm (6–8 inches)
Lifespan: 50+ years
Temperament: Hardy, active and inquisitive

Hermann’s Tortoises are one of the most popular pet tortoise species, valued for their manageable size and hardy nature.

Housing & Enclosure Requirements

Hermann’s Tortoises benefit greatly from outdoor enclosures during warmer months, where they can experience natural sunlight.

Typical housing options:

  • Outdoor enclosure: secure garden pen with plants and shelter

  • Indoor tortoise table: suitable for colder months or young tortoises

Key requirements:

  • UVB lighting when housed indoors

  • Basking area: around 32–35°C

  • Cooler areas for temperature regulation

  • Hides and shaded areas

Providing a varied, naturalistic environment encourages healthy behaviour.

Diet & Nutrition

Hermann’s Tortoises are herbivores that feed primarily on leafy plants and weeds. A healthy diet should include:

  • Dandelion leaves

  • Plantain

  • Clover

  • Rocket and other leafy greens

Their diet should be high in fibre and low in protein, closely resembling the plants they would naturally eat in the wild. Calcium supplementation is often recommended to support shell health.

Temperament & Handling

Hermann’s Tortoises are generally calm and inquisitive reptiles. They often become familiar with their environment and may even approach their keeper during feeding time.

While they can tolerate gentle handling, they are best enjoyed by observing their natural behaviours as they explore and graze. Because they can live for many decades, they should always be considered a long-term commitment.

Is a Hermann’s Tortoise Right for You?

Hermann’s Tortoises can make excellent reptile pets but require careful long-term care.

Prospective keepers should be prepared to:

  • Provide a secure outdoor enclosure when weather allows

  • Maintain proper heating and UVB indoors if needed

  • Offer a varied plant-based diet

  • Commit to a lifespan that can exceed 50 years

With the right care, Hermann’s Tortoises can be hardy, active and incredibly rewarding reptiles to keep.
